Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint or joints. A joint is that part of the body where two different bones meet. Arthritis is frequently accompanied by joint pain commonly referred to as arthralgia. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, most common being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The types range from those related to wear and tear of cartilage to inflammation resulting from an overactive immune system. Arthritis affects the joints, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, and can affect other internal body organs. If a person feels persistent joint pain and stiffness, immediate medical advice should be sought to minimize the disabling effects of arthritis.
